In a shocking incident, Sgt. Quornelius Radford, an Army logistics sergeant assigned to the 2nd Brigade Combat Team at Fort Stewart, Georgia, allegedly opened fire on his co-workers on August 7, 2025, wounding 5 people.
According to former co-workers, Radford had endured relentless bullying over his stutter almost as soon as he joined the military in 2018. Soldiers who trained with Radford at the Army's Advanced Individual Training (AIT) school in Virginia said he was mocked and teased for his speech impediment, to the point where he could barely talk.
Despite the bullying, Radford appeared laid back and showed no signs of anger or resentment, his former colleagues said. He was described as a normal, playful person and a hardworking soldier. However, the Wednesday morning shooting at Fort Stewart came as a complete shock to those who knew him.
The wounded soldiers were in stable condition, and three were released from hospitals the same day. The investigation into the motive is ongoing, as Army officials said it remains unclear whether the victims were subordinates or superiors of Radford.
Radford, a 28-year-old native of Jacksonville, Florida, was tackled and subdued by fellow soldiers, ending his alleged shooting rampage. He remains in custody and has been interviewed by the Army Criminal Investigation Division.
