Army Sergeant Accused of Wounding 5 Comrades at Georgia Military Base
7 Aug
Summary
- 5 U.S. Army soldiers injured in shooting at Fort Stewart
- Suspect, Sgt. Quornelius Radford, apprehended by fellow troops
- Military police responded within 3-5 minutes, protocols praised

According to the news report, on Wednesday, a shooting incident at Fort Stewart in Georgia left 5 U.S. Army soldiers injured. The suspect, Sgt. Quornelius Radford, 28, of Jacksonville, Florida, allegedly shot his fellow service members with a personal handgun in the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team area.
Retired Army Col. Mike Bumgarner, who previously oversaw emergency services and policing at Fort Stewart, stated that military police would have arrived with multiple units within 3-5 minutes of the 911 call. He also noted that the soldiers' quick evacuation, barricading, and action to curb the threat likely aided in the suspect's speedy apprehension.
While the investigation is ongoing, officials said Radford did not have any prior disciplinary or behavioral issues. However, court records show he was recently arrested for driving under the influence and failure to obey traffic control devices, which was unknown to his chain of command. Bumgarner suggested that "something went wrong somewhere" and that the Army's support systems may have failed to identify and address the issue.

The Army's Criminal Investigation Division, potentially with FBI support, is now looking into the incident, including the registered weapons and any potential links to terrorism or other larger issues. Bumgarner acknowledged that while such incidents are "exceptionally rare" in the tight-knit military community, there is no simple solution to prevent weapon misuse.
