In a disturbing case that unfolded in Dublin, Ireland, an American man named Kevin Yungman (32) has been convicted and sentenced for raping a Brazilian woman in June 2018. The incident occurred when the victim, who was 19 years old at the time, met Yungman three months earlier in Paris.
The two had initially engaged in consensual sexual activity, but during one encounter, Yungman placed his hands around the woman's neck, causing her to pass out. He later explained that this was a technique he used, claiming it could be addictive. The woman said she was scared by this.
They met again in Dublin, where Yungman raped the woman after placing his arms around her neck and squeezing hard, causing her to lose consciousness. In her victim impact statement, the woman described experiencing severe mental health issues, including panic attacks, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, and a loss of faith in God, in the aftermath of the assault.
Yungman was arrested in the United States in 2024 and extradited to Ireland, where he pleaded guilty to the rape charge. Last week, he was sentenced to 6 years in prison, with the final 12 months suspended. The judge praised the victim's resilience and progress in her recovery, noting that she is an "incredibly articulate and thoughtful person."
Yungman's mother also took the stand, offering a heartfelt apology to the victim and acknowledging the need for accountability and justice. She expressed her pain at the thought of her son being imprisoned in a foreign country, but said that "even in our pain, we know this is the truth."
The judge emphasized the importance of respecting consent in sexual activity and said Yungman was "fortunate" to have the support of his family, who he believes will help the defendant rehabilitate himself after serving his sentence.
