An American social-media streamer, Ramsey Khalid Ismael, also known as Johnny Somali, has been sentenced to six months in prison in South Korea. The court convicted him on several charges, including obstructing business and distributing sexual deep fakes. This sentence is among the most severe penalties issued in South Korea for online provocations.
Somali, aged 25, gained notoriety for producing "rage bait" content, which is intentionally designed to provoke anger online. His past actions involved public disturbances and vandalism, including defacing a "Statue of Peace" monument in Seoul. This monument commemorates women forced into sexual slavery by the Japanese military during World War II.
The streamer had been charged previously with being a public nuisance and was barred from leaving South Korea following the monument incident. Prosecutors had initially sought a three-year sentence. Somali expressed remorse in court, stating, "I'm remorseful, I'm sorry for my crimes."
