16 Apr
Summary
- A YouTuber was arrested for entering restricted North Sentinel Island.
- He left a Diet Coke can and coconut as an offering to the tribe.
- The YouTuber faces up to five years in prison for his actions.

A 25-year-old American YouTuber is currently in custody after illegally visiting North Sentinel Island in India's Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Mykhailo Viktorovych Polyakov was arrested two days after setting foot on the restricted territory, aiming to interact with the isolated Sentinelese tribe. He spent approximately an hour on the island, leaving a Diet Coke can and a coconut as offerings before returning to his boat. He was subsequently apprehended in Port Blair.
A case has been registered against Polyakov for violating Indian laws that prohibit contact with the indigenous inhabitants. A court has denied his bail application and extended his judicial custody. The Sentinelese are considered one of the world's last pre-Neolithic tribes and have a history of defending their territory aggressively against outsiders. Polyakov faces potential imprisonment of up to five years, with his next court appearance scheduled for April 29.
Authorities emphasize that Polyakov's actions posed a significant threat to the Sentinelese people, potentially introducing diseases to which they have no immunity. The tribe's isolation is crucial for their survival, and contact is strictly prohibited by law. Groups like Survival International have condemned the YouTuber's 'reckless and idiotic' attempt, highlighting the dangers to both the adventurer and the indigenous population. Previous incidents, such as the 2018 death of missionary John Chau, underscore the extreme risks involved in approaching North Sentinel Island.
