Summary
- Accused shot in leg after setting elderly woman on fire.
- Attack motivated by dispute over woman's son leaving with accused's wife.
- Police recovered pistol, cartridge, and mobile phone from accused.
In a swift response to an attempted burning of an elderly woman, police in Kannauj apprehended the primary suspect, Sarvesh Batham (42), after a late-night encounter. The incident occurred in Tigudiya village, where Batham allegedly poured petrol on 60-year-old Sontara and set her ablaze. The motive appears to be Batham's anger after Sontara's son, Anuj, reportedly left with Batham's wife.
During a police cordon on Talgram Road, Batham reportedly fired upon officers, resulting in him being shot in the leg. He was subsequently arrested and hospitalized. Authorities recovered a country-made pistol, ammunition, a mobile phone, and a motorcycle from the accused. A formal complaint was filed by the victim's husband, and legal proceedings are underway.
