A profoundly deaf aspiring accountant, Zahwa Mukhtar, 27, was killed after befriending strangers during a night out in Stoke Newington, north London. The court heard that Duane Owusu, 36, allegedly launched a violent assault, kicking Ms Mukhtar before delivering a fatal punch to her neck. She fell, hitting her head with a 'sickening thud', suffering a fractured skull and fatal brain injury.
Jurors at the Old Bailey heard that Ms Mukhtar had found herself in a car with Owusu and his friends, having consumed alcohol and drugs. Her erratic behavior and flirting reportedly caused annoyance. The alleged trigger for Owusu's attack was Ms Mukhtar beginning to record a video on her phone.
Footage showed Owusu throwing Ms Mukhtar's phone from the car before ejecting her. Despite attempts by another woman to intervene, Owusu continued the assault. He then shouted at others to get back in the car, leaving Ms Mukhtar to die on the pavement. Owusu, from Dagenham, denies charges of murder and manslaughter. The trial is ongoing.
