Wildlife Carer Cleared After 5-Year Legal Battle
13 Mar
Summary
- Former wildlife carer Tracy Clare Dods was cleared of all charges.
- Judge criticized aggressive behaviour by WIRES and RSPCA officers.
- Conviction for animal cruelty was overturned on appeal.

A former wildlife carer has been acquitted of all animal cruelty charges, marking the end of a five-year legal process. Tracy Clare Dods, 56, successfully appealed a criminal conviction and sentence that included a five-year ban on owning animals. The decision was celebrated by approximately 60 supporters, many of whom are fellow wildlife carers.
During the appeal, Judge Nanette Williams critiqued the conduct of WIRES and RSPCA officers during an unannounced visit in March 2021, describing their actions as "at times aggressive." The judge also noted that the RSPCA, as the prosecuting authority, failed to present crucial witnesses to prove its case beyond a reasonable doubt.
This ruling overturns a previous verdict from March of last year. Dods had been found guilty of aggravated animal cruelty for allegedly failing to seek veterinary care for Dolores, a female eastern grey kangaroo with injuries, between February 20 and March 8, 2021.
