- The suspect, identified as Nasire Best, had a history of mental health issues.

A security incident near the White House on Saturday evening (US time) led to a brief lockdown of the presidential residence. US Secret Service agents fatally shot a suspect who reportedly opened fire on them at a security checkpoint. The incident occurred around 6 pm at the intersection of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW.
Law enforcement officials identified the suspect as 21-year-old Nasire Best. Investigations revealed he had a history of mental health issues and prior encounters with law enforcement, including threats made to agents in June 2025 and entering a restricted area. He had also attempted to gain entry to the White House in July 2025 and was sent for psychiatric evaluation.
President Donald Trump was inside the White House at the time of the shooting and was unharmed. He had been engaged in calls with international leaders concerning a potential peace deal with Iran and also spoke with the Israeli Prime Minister earlier that day.
Several journalists near the scene reported hearing numerous gunshots, with estimates ranging from 15 to 30. One bystander sustained injuries during the exchange of gunfire. The motive behind Best's actions is not yet clear, and the FBI is supporting the Secret Service in the ongoing investigation.
