RCMP Officers Offer Warmth & Connection to Homeless
5 Nov
Summary
- Winter warming kits provide essentials to those experiencing homelessness.
- Kits foster human connection and build trust with vulnerable individuals.
- Co-response model pairs officers with nurses for mental health support.

West Shore RCMP officers are now distributing winter warming kits to assist individuals experiencing homelessness, especially those managing mental health challenges. Developed by the Mental Health Unit supervisor and nursing partners, these kits offer practical items such as rain ponchos, shower wipes, toothbrushes, socks, gloves, handwarmers, and granola bars.
This initiative extends beyond the specialized Mental Health Unit, allowing frontline officers across the West Shore to carry and distribute the kits. The goal is to provide immediate relief and, crucially, to establish trust and open lines of communication.
Corporal Justine Dancey emphasized that these simple gestures can be the first step in connecting with vulnerable individuals. The warming kits complement the existing co-response model, where RCMP officers and Island Health nurses work together to address mental health concerns.
This collaborative approach enables assessments to occur in various settings, including homes and public spaces, providing tailored support to the unhoused population and others facing difficulties.
