A man was shot by police in West Philadelphia on Friday evening after reportedly pointing a gun at officers. The incident began around 5:15 p.m. when authorities received a report of an armed individual on Funston Street. Responding officers located the 37-year-old man in the street with a gun to his head.
Officers attempted to negotiate with the man, treating the situation like a barricade. However, he subsequently moved toward an abandoned property and allegedly pointed the gun at the officers. In response, seven officers, including supervisors, discharged their firearms, striking the man multiple times.
He was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. Police noted that they had responded to a domestic situation involving the man and his partner the previous night, which reemerged Friday and led to the man arming himself. The domestic situation will be part of the ongoing investigation into the shooting. The seven officers who fired their weapons will be placed on administrative leave as per department policy.
