Nuts & Plastic Nightmare: Wedding Cake Danger
27 Oct
Summary
- Bride's wedding cake contained plastic pieces and undeclared nuts.
- Baker assured nut-free environment but used a domestic kitchen.
- Unregistered business led to no food safety checks and a £3963 fine.

A Cornwall bride's wedding cake was discovered to contain plastic fragments between its icing layers, posing a severe health risk. This discovery came after the baker had assured the customer the cake would be made in a completely nut-free environment, a critical requirement due to one bride's severe nut allergy and history of anaphylaxis. Investigations revealed the cake was not prepared in the advertised studio but in a domestic kitchen, and neither location was registered as a food business with Cornwall Council.
The unregistered status meant the premises had not undergone necessary food safety inspections, which would have included verification of allergen claims. The baker, Faye Selway, faced legal action and pleaded guilty to four charges under the Food Safety Act. A magistrates' court imposed a fine of £896 plus £3,067 in costs, totaling £3,963, for the serious breaches of food safety regulations.
