Three wallabies are recovering at a Spanish zoo following their rescue from an illegal cannabis plantation. The raid, conducted on June 30, uncovered a distressing scene where dozens of animals were kept in unsanitary conditions. Police initially investigated the property for marijuana cultivation but discovered a "unusual scene" upon entry.
Officers dismantled six indoor marijuana-growing operations, seizing nearly 1,000 cannabis plants. They also found three wallabies, two roe deer, three calves, and 14 dogs living in filthy conditions. Numerous dead animals, including hundreds of chickens, were found in advanced stages of decomposition.
Two people were arrested in connection with the raid. They face charges including public health offenses related to drug trafficking, animal abuse, crimes against wildlife, illegal possession of weapons, and electricity theft. The wallabies and deer were housed in a garden used by the suspects and their children. The rescued wallabies were transported to a zoo in Toledo province for care.
