In Norfolk, Virginia, Kristie Marie Lynch received a 25-year prison sentence on April 3, 2026, for her involvement in the first-degree murder of Jose Luis Moreno. Moreno, who had disabilities affecting his mobility and received Supplemental Security Disability Income, had been living with the Lynches since 2022. Prosecutors stated the couple targeted Moreno for not contributing to household chores and for speaking Spanish.
Authorities believe the Lynches physically punished Moreno on multiple occasions. The fatal attack, which involved a frying pan, belt, baseball bat, and dog leash, likely occurred on August 9, 2023. Kristie Lynch reportedly struck Moreno with a frying pan, while her husband used a belt and dog leash for further assault. James Christian Lynch, who pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, did not seek medical help for Moreno, fearing arrest.
Moreno's body was found two days later, discovered by authorities after the Lynches spoke to a pastor. He was found with numerous bruises, cuts, and ligature marks. Evidence indicated the couple attempted to clean the crime scene. Kristie Lynch had claimed Moreno sexually assaulted her, allegedly prompting her husband to initiate the deadly confrontation. Moreno's brother expressed profound disgust at the violence inflicted upon him.
