- Sentence exceeds state guidelines due to severity of injuries

In a tragic case, a Virginia man has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for the beating death of his 2-month-old daughter. According to the Commonwealth's Attorney, on December 20, 2019, La'Shaun Quintae Holloway, 27, was caring for the infant when family members heard him yelling obscenities at her over an Xbox headset. Shortly after, the baby was found unresponsive and rushed to the hospital, where she was placed on life support. Sadly, she succumbed to her injuries several days later.
The medical examination revealed the extent of the abuse, with the baby suffering from 26 rib fractures in various stages of healing, a fractured clavicle, a skull fracture, bruising around her eyes, and a severe brain bleed. Authorities determined the injuries were the result of abusive head trauma. Holloway was convicted of second-degree murder and child abuse in August 2022.
In sentencing Holloway, the judge imposed a 30-year prison term, exceeding the state's sentencing guidelines, which recommended a maximum of 23 years and 8 months. The Commonwealth argued that the severity of the injuries, the young age of the victim, and the brutality of the crime warranted a harsher sentence, which the judge agreed with.
