Victoria Police Crack Down on Illegal E-Bikes
24 Jun
Summary
- Hundreds of fines issued for non-compliant e-bikes in Melbourne.
- Penalties include $1018 fines for unregistered or unlicensed riding.
- Police urge vigilance ahead of school holidays to avoid penalties.

In a significant safety operation, Victorian Police have issued hundreds of fines across Melbourne CBD for non-compliant electric bicycles. The three-week blitz, codenamed Operation Consider, primarily targeted e-bike riders, including those in food delivery services. Officers identified 44 unregistered, overpowered e-bikes and 32 instances of unlicensed riding.
Penalties for riding illegal e-bikes are substantial, with fines of $1018 for using an unregistered vehicle and an equal amount for unlicensed driving. Riders caught without helmets faced a $254 penalty. Police are strongly advising parents and children to verify their e-bikes adhere to Victorian road laws, which stipulate a maximum power output of 250 watts and a speed limit of 25km/h, with functioning pedals.
These enforcement efforts come in the wake of several high-profile e-bike related fatalities on Victorian roads earlier this year. The challenge of managing and enforcing compliance for the growing number of electric bicycles is a national concern, prompting stricter regulations in other states as well. Police have emphasized that compliance checks will continue, especially during the upcoming school holidays.
