Hero Vet's Brave Act Cleared After Two-Year Ordeal

A heroic act of intervention by US Army veteran Russell Harrison has been formally recognized over a decade after the event. In the summer of 2015, Harrison heard screams and rushed to his female neighbor's aid in Frankston, Melbourne. He found an intruder strangling her and intervened, ultimately subduing the attacker.
The intruder, Adam Slomczewski, who had a history of drug use and criminal activity, died from cardiac arrest during the struggle. Slomczewski was also a suspect in a murder case. Harrison subsequently underwent nearly two years of rigorous police and coronial investigations before being cleared.
Recently, Harrison received the Commendation for Brave Conduct in the Governor-General's Australian Bravery Decorations. He expressed that the award signifies validation for his actions, stating he would intervene again without hesitation. Other recipients of bravery awards were also mentioned, including those for rescues in Queensland and Victoria, and a group citation for the Granville train disaster.
