A 22-year-old Vermont man, Tyrin A. Smith, was arrested on July 29 and faces multiple criminal charges. Police allege he electronically deceived two Moretown residents, gaining access to their bank accounts and transferring a total of $18,002.46. These funds were reportedly moved into an account Smith allegedly opened using someone else's identification.
Authorities also seized a firearm during a search of Smith's residence following his arrest in Winooski. He is prohibited from possessing firearms due to a prior felony conviction for burglary, which involved a 2023 Burlington break-in and shooting. Smith has been charged with false pretenses, grand larceny, identity theft, computer fraud, false personation, and illegal firearm possession.
He was held on $8,000 bail and was scheduled to appear in Washington Superior Court on July 30. The investigation also identified EastRise Credit Union as a victim. Residents who discover unauthorized transfers should immediately contact their bank, report the incident, and preserve all related records for investigation.
