In a Varanasi special Pocso court, 27-year-old vegetable vendor Vijay Sonkar received a life sentence on Saturday for the 2021 rape of a 17-year-old victim. The court also imposed a Rs 50,000 fine, stipulating that 70% be awarded to the survivor as compensation.
The accused allegedly lured the speech and hearing-impaired minor to his home, committed the rape, and recorded a video of the act. A complaint was filed by the survivor's uncle in August 2021 at the Bhelupur police station. The court found Sonkar guilty under relevant sections of the IPC and Pocso Act.
The judgment highlighted the survivor's vulnerability due to her disabilities, stating the offense reflected a depraved criminal mindset. To ensure justice, the court deemed the maximum punishment necessary. The prosecution successfully proved its case through six witnesses, including the survivor, and presented compelling medical and documentary evidence.
