Shootout Leads to Capture of Notorious Looting Gang in Varanasi

On November 9, 2025, Varanasi police conducted a late-night operation near the Lahartara railway overbridge and arrested two members of a gang involved in drugging and robbing passengers. One of the accused, Asif, sustained a bullet injury during an exchange of fire with the police and was arrested along with his accomplice Jeeshan.

The police also recovered firearms, cartridges, and looted gold jewelry from the suspects' possession. According to the Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Chetganj Ishan Soni, the police had received a tip-off about the criminals' movements and set up a cordon on Lahartara Road. When the two suspects on a motorcycle tried to flee towards Sigra, the police surrounded them near the DRM Office, leading to the shootout.

Both Asif and Jeeshan are residents of Bijnor district and have a long criminal history. They were wanted in multiple cases of loot and poisoning, including an incident on October 21 where they targeted the wife of a police constable at the Banaras railway station.
