In Varanasi, police apprehended a 24-year-old man, Virendra Yadav, in connection with the murder of his friend, Aftab Alam, aged 28. Alam's body was discovered near a pond in Mahagaon Madai village on January 8, 2026, showing signs of distress.
Investigators identified Yadav as the prime suspect based on unusual financial activity. Notably, Rs 40,000 was transferred via UPI to Yadav's account on January 8, the same day Alam's body was found. The victim's family, upon filing a complaint on January 21, highlighted these suspicious transactions.
During interrogation on January 25, Yadav confessed to the crime. He alleged that Alam had deceived him into consuming cow meat last September and subsequently revealed the incident to others, causing him significant ridicule and humiliation. Yadav claimed this shame fueled his motive to murder his former colleague and friend, with whom he had previously worked in Bengaluru.
