Uvalde Officer Trial Begins: Negligence in School Massacre?

Jury selection began on January 5, 2026, for Adrian Gonzales, a former Uvalde school police officer implicated in the tragic response to the Robb Elementary School massacre. He is charged with 29 counts of child abandonment or endangerment, one for each child in the classroom, and has pleaded not guilty.

Gonzales' trial is taking place in Corpus Christi, Texas, following a change of venue request granted due to concerns about seating an impartial jury in Uvalde. The charges stem from the critical delay in law enforcement confronting the gunman, Salvador Ramos, who was not neutralized until approximately 77 minutes after the first officers arrived. A Justice Department report highlighted "cascading failures of leadership, decision-making, tactics, policy, and training" in the response.
