Summary
- Kouri Richins convicted of aggravated murder for poisoning her husband.
- She allegedly used five times the lethal dose of fentanyl in a drink.
- Richins was in $4.5m debt and sought inheritance, prosecutors said.

Kouri Richins was convicted of aggravated murder in Utah on Monday, after being accused of poisoning her husband, Eric Richins, with fentanyl. Prosecutors presented evidence that Richins administered a dose of the synthetic opioid that was five times the lethal amount into a cocktail her husband consumed in March 2022.
During the trial, prosecutors detailed Richins' significant financial struggles, with $4.5 million in debt. They argued her motive was to inherit her husband's estate, valued at over $4 million, and to pursue a relationship with another man. Summit County prosecutor Brad Bloodworth stated, "She wanted to leave Eric Richins but did not want to leave his money."
Beyond the murder conviction, Richins was also found guilty of attempted murder related to a Valentine's Day poisoning attempt weeks earlier, where she allegedly gave her husband a fentanyl-laced sandwich. Additional felony convictions include forgery and insurance fraud for falsely claiming benefits after her husband's death.
Richins, a real estate agent, had reportedly opened multiple life insurance policies on her husband without his knowledge, totaling approximately $2 million in benefits. Text messages presented as evidence suggested fantasies of leaving her husband, obtaining millions through divorce, and marrying her alleged lover.
Her trial was unexpectedly shortened when she waived her right to testify and her defense rested without calling witnesses. Sentencing is scheduled for May 13th, which would have been her husband's 44th birthday. The aggravated murder charge alone carries a potential sentence of 25 years to life.
