Prominent American playwright and actor Jeremy O. Harris has been arrested in Japan on suspicion of smuggling ecstasy. Harris, recognized for his Tony-nominated play 'Slave Play' and his role in Netflix's 'Emily in Paris,' was apprehended on November 16th at Naha Airport in Okinawa.
Customs officials discovered 0.78 grams of crystalized MDMA, commonly known as ecstasy, inside a container within a tote bag Harris was carrying. The playwright had reportedly traveled from London via Taiwan before arriving in Okinawa, a popular tourist destination, for sightseeing. Authorities believe the drug was intended for personal use and have not found any other illicit substances.
Harris was taken into custody, and the case has been forwarded to prosecutors for further investigation. If convicted of drug smuggling in Japan, Harris could face a prison sentence of several years. His representatives have not yet issued a public statement regarding the arrest.
