Federal authorities, including the U.S. Justice Department and the FBI, have disrupted a sophisticated scam targeting individuals holding U.S. security clearances. Thirteen fraudulent websites, suspected to be backed by Chinese agents, were disabled. These sites masqueraded as legitimate consulting firms, advertising generic job opportunities.
The fake recruiters pressured candidates, who were current or former U.S. government and military employees, to disclose confidential information. They employed tactics such as using fabricated contracts, confidentiality agreements, false identities, artificial intelligence, and monetary incentives to legitimize their scheme.
Further investigation revealed that the conspirators used fake online payment accounts and cryptocurrency to conceal the origin of funds transferred from outside the United States. Despite the evidence, the involved parties denied any governmental involvement. Officials caution the public to be extremely wary of online offers promising easy income for vague consulting work, highlighting the need for vigilance against potential malicious targeting and the protection of sensitive information.
