A vendor, Ajay Pratap Singh, allegedly shot and killed two Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) officials in Uttar Pradesh's Badaun district on Thursday. The victims were Deputy General Manager Sudhir Gupta, 55, and Assistant Manager Harshit Mishra, 34. Singh reportedly acted out of anger after being blacklisted from an HPCL compressed biogas plant about eight months prior.
Singh surrendered at the Musajhag police station shortly after the killings, accompanied by a crowd of locals. Investigators believe Singh blamed DGM Gupta for the blacklisting, which stemmed from complaints of indecent behavior and threats. Gupta had reportedly applied for voluntary retirement, with his tenure ending on March 31, 2026.
During an attempt by police on Friday to recover the firearm, Singh allegedly fired at the team and tried to escape, sustaining injuries to both legs. Two police officers have been suspended for failing to act on previous threats made by Singh against Gupta. Mishra's father alleged political patronage shielded the accused from police action.
The attack occurred when Singh forcibly entered the plant, confronted the officials, and fired upon them. Both victims were pronounced dead at a community health center due to significant blood loss. An FIR was registered on February 4, 2026, following a complaint by Gupta about death threats from Singh.
