In a remarkable display of swift action, Uttar Pradesh Police rescued a 20-year-old man in Prayagraj within just seven minutes of receiving a critical alert. The incident unfolded on July 25 in the Manda police station area.
The youth had uploaded a disturbing video on Instagram, documenting himself consuming large quantities of sindoor (vermilion) and stating his intention to die. This post triggered an emergency notification from Meta to the UP Police Headquarters.
Acting immediately on the 'imminent suicide risk' flagged by Meta, officials traced the youth's location using his mobile number. The Prayagraj Commissionerate was alerted, leading Sub-Inspector Shiv Kumar Goyal and constable Amit Yadav to reach the man's residence promptly.
Upon arrival, officers found him in severe distress, surrounded by empty sindoor packets. He was promptly taken to a local hospital for treatment and later discharged. During counseling, he revealed a recent breakup as the reason for his actions.
This successful rescue highlights the effectiveness of a coordination mechanism established with Meta in 2022. Since January 1, 2023, police interventions based on such alerts have reportedly saved 3,420 lives.
