The Uttar Pradesh Police have successfully dismantled a 'looteri dulhan' (fraud bride) gang responsible for extorting money and jewellery from families shortly after wedding ceremonies. On Friday, Dhanpatganj police arrested four individuals, three of whom were women, and confiscated cash and ornaments.
The gang's modus operandi involved using forged identities to arrange marriages and gain the trust of families. Following the wedding ceremonies, the bride and her accomplices would demand additional money. When resisted, they resorted to threats of false criminal cases, including human trafficking and rape allegations.
A complaint filed on February 11 by Jagdish from Rajasthan detailed how his son Rohitash was married on February 10. Soon after, the bride and her associates demanded Rs1.1 lakh and Rs7,000 in cash, followed by a demand for Rs64,000 more near Benipur on the Purvanchal expressway. Realizing they were defrauded, Jagdish alerted the police, leading to the arrests near the Benipur underpass on Thursday.
Police seized Rs19,500 in cash, along with various ornaments. An FIR has been registered, and investigations are ongoing to uncover the gang's wider network and identify potential other victims.
