Unsolved Murder: Family Questions Police Handling

The family of Lucy Hargreaves, a 22-year-old woman tragically murdered in her Liverpool home on August 3, 2005, has voiced significant concerns regarding the police and Crown Prosecution Service's handling of the ongoing investigation. Hargreaves was shot by three masked intruders while she slept, and her partner and young daughter narrowly escaped.

Two individuals, Kirk Bradley and Tony Downes, were tried for her murder in December 2007, but charges were dismissed mid-trial due to insufficient evidence regarding a crucial mobile phone. The primary suspect, Kevin Parle, believed to be the third killer, fled to Spain shortly after the shooting and remains a fugitive 21 years later, listed among the National Crime Agency's most wanted.

The family's formal complaint, submitted in April 2022 after earlier concerns were dismissed, highlights alleged failings in the original investigation. These include questions about bail conditions for Parle and the prosecution's presentation of evidence related to a stolen vehicle used in the crime. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) upheld the family's appeal, ordering Merseyside Police to re-investigate their complaint, the outcome of which is still pending.

Merseyside Police has stated they are conducting a comprehensive review of the case and will share findings with the family.
