A tragic incident at the University of California, Berkeley, has resulted in the death of a 19-year-old student. The student was found unresponsive near a pool at the Alpha Delta Phi fraternity house during a large party last week. Responding medics performed CPR and transported him to the hospital in critical condition, but he later died.
The Berkeley Police Department has stated that their investigation does not currently indicate foul play. However, the case has been forwarded to the Alameda County District Attorney's Office for review of potential charges against the fraternity's safety coordinator for allegedly supplying alcohol to minors. The party was estimated to have over 300 guests.
The fraternity received a public nuisance violation for the large gathering, and the Fire Department also issued a citation for exceeding permit limits and revoked a permit for a subsequent event. The national Alpha Delta Phi organization has been contacted for comment as authorities continue their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the student's death.
