Two students from Mumbai have died after allegedly consuming Ecstasy at a music concert at the NESCO Exhibition Centre. Shreya Rai and Bismat Singh Amarjit Singh Bhasin, both students of Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies, succumbed to suspected drug overdoses, while their friend Sheetal Salvi remains in the ICU. Anand Patel, a drug peddler from Kalyan, was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly supplying the Ecstasy pills, which were reportedly delivered to attendees via the Porter app.
Police have also arrested five others, including NESCO vice president Balkrishna Kurup and an employee of the event's production house, for allegedly failing to conduct rigorous searches for narcotics. The investigation was prompted by an FIR registered by a sub-inspector after the accidental deaths were reported on Saturday. Concert attendee Sheetal Salvi stated that she and her friends consumed yellow pills, identified as Ecstasy, handed to them by a college friend. She mentioned having previously taken a similar pill in October 2025.
Authorities are investigating the possibility of drug adulteration and the effects of potent stimulants like Ecstasy, which can lead to hyper-stimulation, cardiac arrest, and other severe health complications. Event management experts note a surge in live shows post-Covid but acknowledge the difficulty in detecting powdered drugs. The current legal proceedings include charges under culpable homicide not amounting to murder and relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.
