- Federal agents raided five Twin Cities autism centers and over a dozen daycare sites.
- The Minnesota Department of Human Services designated the EIDBI program as 'high risk'.
- Three raided facilities sought millions in state reimbursements for services.
Federal agents executed search warrants on five autism centers and more than a dozen daycare facilities across the Twin Cities on Tuesday as part of an extensive fraud probe. State officials identified Global Star Therapy LLC, Empower Skill Academy, Aspen Associates LLC, and Mendota Autism as some of the targeted entities.
The Minnesota Department of Human Services has designated the EIDBI program as "high risk" after conducting 444 on-site visits of service providers, with a revalidation deadline set for May 31. Human Services Commissioner Shireen Gandhi stated the action targets criminals exploiting social service systems.
Amidst claims of collaboration, FBI Director Kash Patel disputed credit taken by state leaders, asserting the FBI and DOJ executed the warrants. WCCO confirmed visits to three raided centers found them closed, with one employee stating law enforcement confiscated electronic equipment.
Data indicates these facilities sought substantial state reimbursements. Empower Skill Academy requested approximately $526,000 in 2023, increasing to $2.9 million by 2025, with nearly $2.7 million approved. Aspen Associates requested $975,000 last year, receiving about $390,000, while Mendota Autism received approximately $743,000.
