Keffe D's "Secret" Interview Played in Tupac Murder Trial

In the ongoing trial for the 1996 murder of Tupac Shakur, a pivotal "secret" interview with Duane "Keffe D" Davis was presented to jurors. Davis, allegedly a leader of the South Side Compton Crips, made statements in a 2008 interview while seeking to avoid life imprisonment on drug charges. He claimed his nephew, Orlando "Baby Lane" Anderson, fired the fatal shots from a white Cadillac that pulled alongside Shakur's vehicle in Las Vegas.

Investigators had approached Davis in 2008, initially regarding the murder of Christopher Wallace (The Notorious B.I.G.). During these discussions, Davis volunteered his involvement in Shakur's death. This "proffer session" was recorded, though authorities later acknowledged Las Vegas officials were not notified of the impending confession. Davis, who has pleaded not guilty, maintains he was in the front passenger seat and passed the gun to Anderson.

Prosecutors allege the shooting was retaliation for an earlier assault on Anderson by Shakur and his entourage. This beating stemmed from a prior confrontation where Anderson allegedly robbed a Death Row associate. The defense argues Davis invented his account for leverage and money, asserting detectives did not find his claims credible at the time.

Witnesses have included former officers who facilitated the interview and investigated the case. One detective believed Davis was truthful, noting he implicated his own nephew. Testimony also detailed the complex inter-record label rivalries and the investigation's efforts to link Davis to Sean "Puffy" Combs.
