When bystander Ian McQueen intervened by grabbing Holmes's collar, Holmes retaliated violently. He punched Mr. McQueen, causing him to fall and hit his head. Holmes continued the assault, punching and kicking the motionless victim.
The severe injuries sustained by Mr. McQueen included a brain bleed, fractured jaw, broken nose, fractured rib, and two collapsed lungs, necessitating a lengthy hospital stay. Holmes was arrested following a media appeal and later convicted of grievous bodily harm, possession of an offensive weapon, and drug offenses.
