Hundreds of Babies Likely Buried at Tuam Site
5 Dec, 2025
Summary
- Child-sized graves confirmed at former Tuam mother and baby home.
- Up to 800 infants may be interred in the newly discovered burial ground.
- Excavation efforts are ongoing and expected to continue until 2027.

Investigators at Ireland's former Tuam mother and baby home have confirmed the harrowing discovery of a mass infant burial ground. Compelling evidence of graves, consistent in size with children and infants, has been found on the western edge of the institution's grounds in County Galway. This grim finding aligns with historical site maps marking a 'burial ground' where no surface indications were previously apparent.
The Office of the Director of Authorised Intervention, Tuam (ODAIT), reported that four additional sets of human remains were found, bringing the total to eleven. Initial assessments indicate all are infants buried in coffins. The excavation, which commenced in July and is meticulously carried out by machine and hand, is expected to continue until 2027.
This newly confirmed burial area is located approximately 100 metres from previously discovered underground chambers containing significant quantities of remains. The Bon Secours Sisters and Galway County Council, both of whom have previously apologized for past failings, are contributing to the ongoing excavation costs as efforts continue to provide dignity and identification for the deceased children.
