A sessions court in Mumbai has sentenced a caretaker and her boyfriend to triple life imprisonment for the 2018 murder and robbery of an elderly couple in Bandra. The court rejected the prosecution's plea for the death penalty, stating the case did not qualify as "rarest of rare" due to reliance on circumstantial evidence and potential for reformation.
Caretaker Parvati Khaka, 26, and her boyfriend Singhasan Ekka, 26, were given life sentences for murdering Nanak and Daya Makhijani, both aged 85 and 81 respectively. They also received sentences for robbery and other related offenses, all to be served concurrently.
The elderly couple lived alone in their upscale Bandra home as their families resided abroad. Khaka had been employed as their full-time caretaker for only 15 days prior to the incident. The crime involved the couple being found tied up, with approximately Rs 10 lakh worth of jewelry and cash stolen.
Police apprehended Khaka and Ekka at Nagpur railway station on June 22, 2018, while they were traveling towards Odisha. Recovered items included stolen valuables and train tickets. The court based its decision on witness testimonies, CCTV footage, and the recovery of stolen items.
