Surgeon Accused of Harassment Allowed to Return to Practice

James Gilbert, a former senior registrar and consultant at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust between 2008 and 2022, will be permitted to return to medical practice. This decision follows a failed attempt by the General Medical Council (GMC) to have him removed from the medical register. The GMC had appealed against a previous ruling by the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS) which restored Gilbert's right to practice.
The MPTS had determined that Gilbert had taken positive steps to prevent recurrence of his misconduct and found his fitness to practice was no longer impaired. He was previously suspended for 12 months in 2024. Allegations against Gilbert include sexual harassment of four female colleagues and making racist comments. Specific claims involve inappropriate remarks about colleagues' underwear and being told he was the 'golden boy' of his department.
