FDA Raids Warehouse Linked to 14 Poisoning Deaths
30 May
Summary
- Toxic methanol seized from an unregistered warehouse in Thane.
- Spurious liquor, spiked with industrial methanol, killed 14 people.
- Firm failed to produce any mandatory verification details under the Poisons Act.

The Maharashtra FDA has seized 5,929 kg of toxic methanol from a warehouse in Thane district. This chemical allegedly supplied bootleggers involved in producing spurious liquor, which tragically claimed 14 lives in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad over a two-day period.
A raid on Rex International's Bhiwandi premises revealed the firm's failure to produce any ledger entries or mandatory verification details under the Poisons Act. Police investigations indicated that 10 individuals died in Pimpri Chinchwad and four in Pune after consuming this suspected illicit alcohol.
Further inquiries traced the methanol component directly to Rex International's stock. The company's owners are in custody, and the FDA has moved to permanently cancel their operating licenses. The entire undocumented stock of methanol was seized to prevent further misuse.
