An experienced international traveler from Melbourne lost around $20,000 in valuables during a sophisticated scam at Milan Airport in Italy. Shortly after picking up a rental car, a well-dressed individual alerted him to a supposed tire problem, distracting him as another thief opened the car doors and stole his luggage.
The stolen items included a MacBook, iPad, Apple Watch, a high-end watch, and approximately $2,000 in mixed currencies. The victim, who runs a luxury driving tour company, believes the thieves targeted him due to his premium luggage, noting the operation's precision suggested professionalism.
Following the theft, he used hidden AirTags to track his belongings, which were moved by train before the signal indicated they were in a remote area. While evidence of burnt bags was found, his luggage was gone. However, his MacBook was later recovered by Italian police after nearly a month, thanks to the AirTag's tracking information.
