25 Sep
Summary
- Charges withdrawn for two men in massive 2023 gold heist.
- Over C$20m in gold bars stolen from Toronto Pearson Airport.
- Accused maintained innocence, facing hardship from charges.
Charges have been withdrawn against Amit Jalota and Ali Raza, who were accused in connection with a massive gold heist at Toronto Pearson Airport in April 2023. The theft involved over 6,500 gold bars, valued at C$20 million, along with millions in cash, making it Canada's largest gold theft. Lawyers for both men stated their clients had consistently maintained their innocence and expressed relief, noting the severe impact the accusations had on their lives and livelihoods.
The heist occurred within a cargo facility after the gold arrived on an Air Canada flight from Zurich. Police allege a fake airway bill was used to access the shipment, with a truck then used to transport the roughly 400kg of gold. Several arrests have been made over the past year. One individual received a four-year sentence earlier this year for planning the theft, while another pleaded guilty in the US to firearms trafficking, with Canadian authorities alleging the funds originated from the heist. Two additional accused are awaiting separate trials later this year.
