A 62-year-old man, with no fixed address, has been arrested by Toronto police in relation to an arson investigation. The arrest follows a fire that occurred early Thursday morning at a seniors' housing building near Victoria Park Avenue and Eglinton Avenue East.
Emergency services responded to the fire around 1:52 a.m. The blaze, which was extinguished by fire crews, damaged a ninth-floor hallway. As a result, seniors residing in 18 units were displaced and are expected to remain out of their homes for approximately one week due to water and smoke damage.
Paramedics transported two women to the hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation. The arrested man is facing charges of arson and three counts of disobeying a lawful court order. He was scheduled to appear in court on Friday morning.
Investigators have not yet released information regarding a separate fire that occurred in the same building on June 28, which resulted in one fatality. Any connection between the two incidents remains unclear.
