The Tamil Nadu government has transferred DGP Prisons Sandeep Rai Rathore in the wake of a planned escape by 17 undertrial prisoners from Thekkampatti sub-jail in Theni district. The prisoners escaped after staging a fake medical emergency and overpowering prison guards. Fortunately, all 17 inmates were recaptured by the police within 43 hours of their daring escape.
In response to this major security lapse, the Tamil Nadu prison department has authorized its personnel to use firearms if necessary to prevent future escapes. The recaptured convicts are slated for transfer to high-security correctional facilities. Legal formalities are being completed before their relocation to central prisons in Salem, Vellore, Cuddalore, and Puzhal.
