A brief Tinder encounter in 2019 quickly devolved into severe threats of death and abuse for Nadia, initiating years of mental health difficulties. The incident began when Nadia ended a 20-minute date with Christopher Harkins after noticing warning signs at his Cumbernauld home.
Harkins continued to harass Nadia with relentless calls and messages, including threats against her life and family, and deeply insulting remarks about her appearance. Despite Nadia reporting these threats to Scotland Police the day after the encounter, authorities initially deemed them not a direct threat, advising her to call back only if he took physical action.
This predator had been exploiting women he met online across Scotland and London for over a decade. It wasn't until late 2019 that Harkins faced an official investigation, spurred by one victim's decision to contact the media due to police inaction. In 2024, Harkins was sentenced to 12 years in prison after being found guilty of 19 charges, including physical and sexual assaults against 10 women.
Nadia, now 34, and other victims have called for an apology from Scotland Police for their delayed response. The police acknowledged advancements in their procedures since then, expressing hope that such events would not reoccur. Harkins also pleaded guilty to defrauding women of over £214,000 through fake holiday and investment offers.
