- DNA and genealogy identified victims after decades.

The League City "Texas Killing Fields" near Calder Road saw the discovery of four young women's bodies between 1984 and 1991. This area became infamous for numerous other victims found along the I-45 corridor. The trial of James Dolphs Elmore Jr. commences Monday, with jury selection starting for his alleged role in the 1984 death and disposal of 16-year-old Laura Lynn Miller and Audrey Lee Cook.
Laura Miller vanished in September 1984 and was identified among remains found in February 1986. Audrey Lee Cook, also identified decades later through DNA, was found with Laura. Elmore, who has been cooperating with authorities, is charged with manslaughter and evidence tampering. His cooperation stemmed from discussions with Laura's father, Tim Miller, who founded Texas EquuSearch.
Authorities believe Clyde Hedrick was responsible for the murders of Miller, Cook, Heidi Fye, and Donna Prudhomme, all found in the field. Hedrick died by suicide on March 21, 2026, shortly before he was to be indicted. Elmore's impending trial marks a significant step for families seeking justice, though many cases in the "Texas Killing Fields" remain unsolved.
William Reece, an Oklahoma inmate, received life sentences for three Texas murders, including Laura Smither and Jessica Cain, related to the broader Killing Fields cases. The Galveston County District Attorney's office continues to investigate other active leads, hoping to bring additional perpetrators to justice.
