Terry Kennedy, once a prominent figure in skateboarding, is nearing his release from prison on December 31, 2025. His incarceration stems from a 2021 assault that tragically led to the death of fellow skater Josiah Kassahun. Kennedy's sentence was reduced due to earned credits, allowing for an earlier exit than initially anticipated.
The incident took place on July 27, 2021, in Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois. Prosecutors stated Kennedy punched Kassahun during an argument, causing him to fall and sustain a fatal head injury. While initially charged with first-degree murder, Kennedy was acquitted of that charge in 2022.
He was subsequently convicted of two counts of aggravated battery and received consecutive five-year sentences. With sentence credits applied, his release date is now set for the end of this year, followed by a period of supervised release. The skate community awaits his next steps following his discharge from custody.
