Tennessee Prison Chief Resigns After Botched Execution
3 Oct
Summary
- Prison commissioner resigned due to a botched execution.
- Inmate survived two lethal injection attempts on Wednesday.
- Tennessee halts further executions pending a review.
Tennessee's prison commissioner, Frank Strada, has resigned following a severely botched execution. The execution of convicted murderer Christa Pike on Wednesday failed twice, leaving her in critical condition and requiring hospitalization. Pike, convicted in 1995 for the murder of Colleen Slemmer, survived two attempts with the lethal substance pentobarbital.
This incident is the second failed execution in Tennessee in 2026. In May, a planned execution was halted after medical staff could not find a vein. Governor Bill Lee stated that Commissioner Strada will leave his post this month. Strada maintained that the Department of Correction followed established protocols.
Governor Lee has suspended all further executions for the rest of the year to allow for a thorough review of the process. Had the execution been successful, Pike would have been the first woman executed by Tennessee in over two centuries. Nationally, only 18 women have been executed since 1976.
