A 23-year-old woman in Telangana's Medak district has died by suicide, reportedly due to persistent harassment from her husband and mother-in-law. The victim, Sushmita, who was five months pregnant, allegedly faced abuse over suspicions regarding the paternity of her unborn child. Her husband, G Abhilash, is accused of repeatedly demanding a DNA test.
The harassment escalated during a family meeting on June 23 to discuss baby shower arrangements. An argument led to Abhilash demanding the DNA test in front of both families. Despite community intervention, the alleged mistreatment continued. Two days later, Sushmita was found deceased at her residence.
Police have arrested the husband and his mother. They have been produced before a magistrate and sent to judicial remand. A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including abetment of suicide, based on the complaint filed by the victim's mother. The body was sent for a post-mortem examination.
