A teenager has received a prison sentence of two years and three months after piloting a dinghy that carried a record number of migrants across the English Channel. The individual, identified as Chan Mathok Atak, a 19-year-old from South Sudan, pleaded guilty to endangering others during a sea crossing that occurred on July 23. Prosecutors detailed in Canterbury Crown Court that Atak created a significant risk of death or serious injury for everyone aboard the vessel. This particular crossing, at the time, set a record for the largest group of migrants transported on a small boat in recent history. It is noteworthy that this record has since been surpassed, with a later vessel carrying 230 individuals in August. The case brings attention to the dangerous conditions faced by those undertaking such perilous journeys and the legal consequences for those facilitating them.
