Summary

  • 16-year-old boy was allegedly kidnapped and murdered over a mobile phone.
  • Three suspects, including a juvenile, were detained and arrested.
  • Victim's body was found in a forest after being strangled.

In Latehar district, police have apprehended three individuals, including a juvenile, in connection with the alleged kidnapping and murder of a 16-year-old boy. The victim, Chhotu from Belwatara village, was reportedly killed over a mobile phone.

The motive stemmed from an alleged dispute when Chhotu refused to hand over his phone to one of the accused, whom he knew. This incident occurred on August 15, when the trio allegedly abducted Chhotu, took him to Bansi Nullah in the Kumandi area, strangled him, and subsequently disposed of his body in a nearby forest.

Chhotu's father had filed a missing person report on August 22, unaware of his son's fate. A critical breakthrough in the case, which lacked eyewitnesses, came from technical surveillance of the victim's mobile phone. The suspects had reportedly sold the phone for Rs 3,200. The buyer's information led police to the suspects.

During interrogation, the accused allegedly provided details that led to the recovery of skeletal remains and the victim's school uniform from the crime scene. The 17-year-old accused was presented before the Juvenile Justice Board on Tuesday, while the other two, Premchand Bhuiyan and Shivam Bhuiyan, were remanded to judicial custody.
