The violence erupted when an opposing team became angered after Bazirake's team scored a goal. According to his brother, Jeanpaul, Tumusifu intervened to protect him from the escalating altercation.
Witnesses described a brutal scene where Tumusifu was repeatedly punched, kicked, and stepped on while on the ground. Responding officers found him and transported him to a hospital, where he later died.
